Let’s be real for a sec. Potty training a Shih Tzu puppy... it's probably not the most glamorous part of dog ownership. You might be feeling a little frustrated, or like you’re taking one step forward and two steps back. Trust me, we’ve all been there. It’s totally normal.

But here’s the thing: Shih Tzus are smart little cookies. They just need consistency. And a routine. And maybe a whole lotta patience. But you've got this.

Here's my simple, no fuss guide to getting through the potty training madness and raising a well-behaved puppy.

The Golden Rule: Stick to a Schedule

Your puppy doesn’t know when to go, unless you show 'em! So, the number one rule of potty training a Shih Tzu puppy is to create a schedule and stick to it religiously.

  • First thing in the morning. The second you wake up, head outside. Don't even get that first cup of coffee yet.

  • Right after they eat or drink. Seriously, it's like clockwork. About 15-20 minutes after they finish their meal, they're probably going to need to go.

  • Right after they wake up from a nap. As soon as those little eyes are open, get that puppy moving toward the door.

  • Before bed. One last trip outside, no matter how tired you are.

It seems like a lot, I know. But the more consistent you are now, the less work you'll have to do later. Trust.

Crate Training: A Game Changer

Some people worry that crate training is mean, but it's actually one of the best potty training tips you'll ever get. A dog's natural instinct is not to mess where they sleep. A crate becomes their cozy little den.

  • Start with short periods and make it a positive place. Give them a comfy blanket and a chew toy.

  • The crate should only be big enough for them to stand up, turn around, and lie down. If it's too big, they'll just make one end the bathroom.

  • Never use the crate as punishment. It should be their safe space.

When they’re in their crate, you can rest easy knowing they're holding it.

The Power of Rewards (This Is Huge!)

This is where you get to be a cheerleader. When your puppy does their business outside, you need to throw a little party.

  • Praise: Use an enthusiastic voice! Something like, “Good potty!” or “Good boy!”

  • Treats: Give them a small, high-value treat immediately after they finish. Timing is everything.

  • Playtime: After they do their business, reward them with a few minutes of play outside. They'll start to associate going potty with getting to have fun.

A Few Common Mistakes

Listen, we all make 'em. Here are some things you should try to avoid.

  • Don't scold them after the fact. If you find a puddle on the floor and your puppy isn't right there doing it, it's too late. They won't connect your frustration with what they did.

  • Don't forget to clean messes thoroughly. Use an enzymatic cleaner to get rid of the smell. If they can still smell their "spot," they'll be more likely to go there again.

  • Don't give up! Some puppies get it faster than others. A little setback isn't a failure, it’s just a bump in the road.

Hang in there! With a solid routine and a lot of positive reinforcement, your Shih Tzu will be a potty training pro before you know it.
